Amsterdam Area Water System Replacement Project
May 2025: Survey Efforts
There is upcoming environmental and site survey work in the Amsterdam area. This work is critical to the success of the design of the new system. Within the next couple months, you may see:
-
- Sheffler and Company, Inc. – Survey Crews: these crews will be throughout the Village capturing site features and existing utilities. These crews will be wearing high-visibility shirts and vests, likely a bright orange or green, with the Sheffler and Co. logo on them, and will be driving silver trucks with the Sheffler and Co. logo.
- Arcadis U.S. – Environmental Crews: these crews will be throughout the Village to delineate wetlands, streams, and other environmental features that the system design will need to accommodate. They will be driving misc. rental cars and wearing Arcadis branded high-visibility shirts and vests. They may place small flags in certain areas to mark certain features

Please reach out to the JCWSD if you have any questions. There will be more communications as we progress through the design of this system, including public meeting(s). Please note that if you are not a current water customer and do not actively have water service, you will have no obligation to connect to the new system. We are looking forward to the successful completion of this project for the Village of Amsterdam.
April 2025: Design Kickoff
The Village of Amsterdam’s Water System consist of 30,100 feet of waterlines, 40 fire hydrants, 50 system valves, and an underground concrete storage reservoir. The waterlines vary in size from 2” to
8”, and are comprised mostly of old transite or cast iron. The system was installed sometime during the 1940s. The Village is part of the JCWSD’s Area M PWS. The Amsterdam system serves the approximate 505 people that live within the Village of Amsterdam. The Village is pressurized via the storage reservoir. The source water for the reservoir is from the City of Toronto’s Water Treatment Plant. As the Village is on the complete opposite side of the County from Toronto, the JCWSD pumps the water over 25 miles from the Toronto plant through various transmission and distribution lines, before it arrives at the reservoir. Due to the age of the system, the water system is in need of replacement. The JCWSD has engaged Arcadis to design a new water system for the Village. The project is currently in the design phase, with 100% design expected by the summer of 2026.
